The Secret in the Mirror

personal aims &objectives

A mirror is a magical thing that can turn everything in the world upside down. This game tries to confuse the player’s memory by mirroring things and giving them something to test.

Game rules
Look at a picture in front of a mirror and memorize it for 30s, at the end of which you need to select the corresponding card from the card box.
The player who gets it right will score 1 point, and whoever reaches 20 points first will win.

Playtest

  • 30s is too long, players can easily remember the appearance of the graphics, the game is not very difficult. Experimentation found that only 5 seconds of memory time is needed.
  • Single-player points do not have the excitement of the game competition. Players easily lose the desire to compete.
  • There is no witness/evidence to determine if the player has chosen the right one. So a moderator needs to be added. But the moderator can only record the selected card by taking a photo to prepare for the matching later. To reduce the impact of other items (cell phone photos) on the board game experience, I decided to make two decks of cards, one as a sample and the other printed directly on a flat sheet of paper as a reference choice.

Changed game rules

The game has sample cards and a matching board, with the matching card having all the patterns of the sample cards printed on a sheet of paper. The sample cards are used to present a sample pattern, and the matching board is used to select the pattern.
The game requires 2-4 players. Before the game starts, the 35 patterns of the sample cards are backside face-up on top of each other.
The game starts with 2-4 players facing a mirror.
At the beginning of each turn, one player is required to draw a card from the sample cards with the backside facing everyone and the front side facing the mirror.

  1. Look at the picture in front of the mirror to memorize the card for 5s, then place this sample card backside to you, put it on the table for later comparison with the matching board to verify correctness.
  2. Take out the matching board. Start looking for the pattern that matches the one on the “sample card” and point it out. The winner is the one who picks the target card from the matching board within 3s and confirms that it matches the pattern of the “sample card” after comparison. The rest of the players need to take the penalty. If more than one person gets it right within 3s, the fastest correct answer wins. If no player gets it right within 3s, even if they get it right after 3s, it doesn’t count towards the score.

(Each card has a black dot in the upper left corner to mark the direction in which the pattern should be placed. This black dot is not counted in the memory and matching of the picture)
