Animal Go

Personal aims &Objectives

The game plans to use card drawing instead of dice to control the movement of the character.
The game supports four players, who can freely team up to change cards during play.

Critical Reflection

For map testing

The map needs to have some “function grids” where the player can cross multiple grids to narrow the distance
Each advance tile in the game needs to advance two squares, and each wild card only travels one square. Players start at 0 and 1 is the starting number of squares. If only “forward cards” are played, players will all stay in the even-numbered squares. In order to make competition fun for players, it is necessary to put functional squares that can span multiple squares at odd numbers.
After testing and experiencing the game balance several times, it was decided to set the function squares at 7-12 and 17-23.

For painting testing

For the look of the card, many versions of the draft were tried back and forth. Finally, a version was selected

IMPROVED GAME

Game background
Damn, the critters are dragged to the slaughterhouse!
The critters don’t want to be eaten this winter! They are a group of animals who want to be free!
So, help the little animals and escape from the slaughterhouse!

Game rules

– players need to choose animals to play with, there are four animals in total, representing four players, namely: dogs, sheep, pigs and chickens.

– The game sets 2 kinds of cards:

  • one is action cards: bones, grass, cabbage, rice as everyone’s hand, a total of 4 * 15 = 60 cards.
  • the other one is function cards, there are 8 function cards in total. The function card role will be explained later.
  • each person has five cards initially; the remaining cards are placed in the card pool.
  • the maximum number of cards in each person’s hand is 8.

Play Game
Each turn, when “Dog” plays “Bone”, “Sheep” plays “Grass”, “Pig” plays “Cabbage”, and “Chicken” plays “Rice”, they can move forward 2 squares. Other cards in the hand can only be discarded or exchanged, not played. e.g: “Sheep” may not play “Bones”.
After any player plays a function card, he can select a player to go back 1 square/forward 1 square (he may choose himself).

Each turn, a player may choose one of the following 3 options for action after drawing a card:

  • to play a card in their hand (action card/function card)
  • choose to exchange a card with any of the players.
  • discard 2 cards from their hands.

Updates

After many times of experience, I found several problems, I hope to do similar games in the future can pay attention to it.

  1. The destination number of the map jump is not reasonable, the first jump should jump to an odd number instead of an even number, so as to avoid the player to easily reach the second jump
  2. No enough strategy, next time I want to add four animal restraint relationship, the player can play the restrained animal’s card to make him retreat.
